Leo Kraft's _Gradus_ is the only current book which tries to integrate both subjects. Workbook: Harmony and Voice Leading, for Aldwell/Schachter's Harmony and Voice Leading book download. If they all seem a bit too much at first, I'm sure there's a “For Dummies” book on Western theory. For more modern harmonic structure there's “Harmony” by Mark Sarnecki, “Harmony and Voice Leading” by Aldwell and Schachter, “Music in Theory and Practice” by Benward and Saker, among others. It's probably well-suited for self-instruction. It is a very complete course in common practice tonal harmony. You might want to find these at a library and see which one will help you most. This book is best for those who have already taken a full course in tonal harmony and understand it well from a functional perspective but want to understand it better from a linear perspective. Which is a study on counterpoint – not exactly what you're looking for but it's excellent for fundamentals. It is in many ways an updated successor to Aldwell & Schachter in that it pays attention to every minute detail of voice leading and part-writing.
