War Old Man would probably be less fun if I did not know Starship Troopers, but it would be a good read. A lot of today's science fiction is written by people trying to speak out about the environment or other social issues. So, I chose to read his debut novel, Old Man's War, to finally get a look at what Scalzi is all about. I think that Old Man's War consists of some very good stories with great characters but in terms of world-building they don't make a whole lot of sense. I read Old Man's War on the redeye back from SFO this morning on my Kindle. It was surprisingly good – it felt like an homage to Starship Troopers in a way. John Scalzi's Old Man's War is a great piece of old-fashioned science fiction. Inciteful comment regarding the nature of warfare from John Scalzi's Sci-Fi Novel Old Man's War.
